Keywords

Do keywords matter? Yes.They do. Keywords are the words or phrases that people search for on Google, Safari, Bing, Yahoo or other search engines. By providing the correct keywords, you help your website to be found, and not lost in the abyss of the internet.

Types of Keywords

Did you know there are different types of keywords? There are two types you need to know about for keyword optimizing.

Short Tail Keywords are search phrases with one or more words. They usually contain up to three words. They are less specific and will produce general information in searches.

Examples:

  • Photography
  • Family Photography
  • Photography Marketing
  • Photography Websites

If you enter any of those words or phrases into a search engine, you will see the vast variety of websites that come up. The competition for short tail keywords is high.

If you intend on paying for advertising, using short tail keywords, you will be competing against well known websites. You’ll end up spending a lot of money, and not generate the traffic you were expecting to.

Long Tail Keywords are search phrases with a longer word counts. Long tail keywords are more specific. It might be best to start with them. They are less competitive.

  • Lifestyle Family Photography Workshop
  • Free Photography Website Templates
  • Marketing Ideas For Photographers

Now try a search using the long tail keyword examples. Do you see the difference? Long tail keyword searches are lower, and more specific. There is less competition trying to rank for them. The good new is, visitors to your website are looking for specifics. This makes long tail keywords a better choice.

  • Place Keyword Early in the Title – Titles are the HTML element used to describe the topic of a page. They provides relevant information to search engines, and the people viewing it. It tells them immediately what your post is about.
  • Use Keywords in Content and Subheadings – Use your keyword in the header to grab the attention of the viewer. It’s the first thing viewer’s read after the title, and provides them with information about what the rest of the article contains. Make sure you’re using your keywords naturally. Google can penalize you for keyword stuffing and demote your page.
  • Include Target Keywords in URL – Using the the keyword in the URL makes it easy for users and search engines to navigate and understand the types of content on your website.
  • Fill in the Alt Text and Use Descriptive Keywords – The alt text is what search engines look at to recognize what the image is about, and helps Google index your images. Use your main keywords in alt text.
  • Optimize your Image Files by Naming Them With Keywords – Include the page’s target keyword in the image file name to ensure search engines find you, and rank your page for the right keywords.
  • Be Mindful With Your Keyword Density – Keyword density signals to the search engines what your page or article’s relevance about a specific topic is. Make sure to provide good keywords that relate to your website and products.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing – It’s a trick used to add keywords unnecessarily onto a webpage. It repeats the keyword over and over again throughout the text, in hopes of achieving a higher ranking. It’s spammy, and not approved by search engines, and they will penalize you. Don’t do it. Focus on providing quality content for higher rankings.
