Contest Summary: Landscape Photographer Of The Year

Landscape Photographer of the Year was founded in 2006 by Charlie Waite, one of today’s most respected landscape photographers.

With a total prize fund worth over £20,000, a full colour book of best entries and a popular annual exhibition in Central London, Landscape Photographer of the Year celebrates all that is great about the British landscape and showcases the work of many talented photographers, inspiring visitors to experience the joys of the British landscape first hand. Britain’s heritage is celebrated by people around the world and entries are welcome from everyone, whether resident in Britain or simply visiting.

The Details:

Status: Open for entry

Closing date:  Apr 05, 2020

Winners chosen by: Judging panel

Categories:

  • Classic View – Open to enter in both the adult and youth competitions. We are looking for an image that captures the beauty and variety of the UK landscape. An iconic view; a view along a cliff-side path or of a historic village; a view down a valley; an urban skyline or snow-capped peaks; maybe showing the drama of our seasons.
  • Urban Life – Open to enter in both the adult and youth competitions. It has always been possible to enter city skylines in Classic view and concepts in Your view (and you still can), but this category really focuses on the subject – from historic to modern – but no underground car parks, tube stations etc please – anything urban and of the outdoors is eligible. We will be taking a broad approach subject-wise – the word ‘urban’ is used as a general theme, so ‘suburban’ areas or country towns are fine.
  • Your View – Open to enter in both the adult and youth competitions. What does the UK landscape mean to you? A stream rushing over pebbles, a foggy day in the Peak District, fish & chips on a deserted beach, you and your friends on your first big summit. Pretty much anything goes, as long as it is in the UK and of the outdoors. Use your imagination, as you have the scope for a very conceptual and personal approach.
  • Black and White – Open to enter in both the adult and youth competitions. This category recognises the continued importance of this genre of photography and its popularity amongst Landscape Photographer Of The Year entrants. This can include, urban and suburban landscapes, coastal shots and captures of the classic British countryside.
  • Living Britain Portfolio Category – Open to the youth competition entrants only. For your portfolio of 5 images, you are encouraged to consider the British landscape in the broadest possible sense through making a body of work. In your approach you may wish to consider relationships between various elements such as nature and culture or habitation and environment. You may prefer to creatively explore contemporary landscapes. Your portfolio of work should demonstrate understanding and consideration of aesthetic and conceptual ideas along with a technical ability in camera.

Prizes:

ADULT COMPETITION

The judges will choose the single best image from all four Adult categories. The photographer of this image will be awarded the prestigious title, ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020’ and £10,000.

For the images then judged to be the best in each of the four categories, there will be a prize of £1000.

For the images judged second in each of the four adult categories, there will be a prize of £500.

YOUTH COMPETITION (18 and under on the 5th April 2020)

The photographer, aged 18 or under, who creates the entry chosen by the judges as the single best image, taking into account all four youth categories, will become the Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020 and will win £1,000. Payment of the cash element of the prize will be made to the winner’s parent/guardian.

There will be a prize of a copy of the Awards book for the photographer of the image judged the best in each of the five youth categories.
