How To Capture Stunning Reflections In Your Photos

How To Capture Stunning Reflections In Your Photos with people, water and silhouettes

Find a Reflective Surface

Finding inspiration for reflection photography is not difficult. Reflections are everywhere. They can be found in many places and surfaces such as water, ice, glass, mirrors, and metal. People are also great subjects for reflection photography, when combined with silhouettes.

No matter if you are photographing portraits, landscapes, or street photography scenes, you can use reflections to create stunning photographs. Reflections are fun to work with, and will spark up your creativity.

Time of Day

The best reflection photos are taken during Golden Hour or Blue Hour. You’re more likely to capture better water reflections early in the morning or late in the day.

Try Different Angles

Shooting from a very low angle will capture more of the reflection, and give you a unique perspective of your subject. For creating mirror image landscape photos, compose your shot with the horizon or close to the center of the frame. Try out different angles for more creative shots.

Take Long Exposure Photos

Use Long exposure photography to create dreamy, blurred reflections in the water. There will need to be some movement in the water to create this effect, and you will need a tripod .

Look for symmetry

Symmetry is a powerful tool to use in reflection photography. Turn your landscape photos into a mirror images. Use leading lines, patterns, and architectural details for more visually dramatic images.

Camera Settings

Aperture – Use a smaller aperture to bring out details, stronger reflections, and to keep everything in focus. To create abstract images, use a wide aperture for a shallow depth of field.

Shutter Speed – Use a faster shutter speed to freeze action, such as water splashing in midair, and any other motion. Use a slower shutter speed if you want if you want a smoother, blurred look to the water.

Use A Neutral Density Lens Filter

An ND Filter can be used to capture blurry, smooth water and works beautifully for colorful reflections. The filter is used to reduce the amount of light that enters the lens, and helps even out the light. It allows the use of slower shutter speeds during the day.
