Bokeh Photography – Weekly Photography Challenge

Bokeh Photography - Weekly Photography Challenge - Bicycle

Bokeh Photography is our Weekly Photography Challenge

What is bokeh photography?

Have you see photographs that have little circles, spheres or orbs of light in the background? That is bokeh photography.

Bokeh is the blur in the out-of-focus areas of an image. You create bokeh by shooting with a fast lens and using a wide aperture setting.

Bokeh originates from the Japanese word boke, which means haze or blur.

Light Sources for Bokeh

Urban locations are great for bokeh. Traffic lights, car tail lights and street lights provide interesting elements for your background.

Strands of lights work nicely too. You can find them in cafes or restaurants with outdoor patios and of course at Christmastime.

Lakes or other bodies of water can create nice bokeh effects when the light reflects onto them.

Shoot early in the morning while areas are still wet with morning dew. Water droplets can produce beautiful bokeh.

Get up close to your subject. Try shooting macro. You’ll get some wonderful bokeh in your images.

If you live in a part of the world that gets snow, winter can be quite magical for creating bokeh images. Take advantage of snow days to create some dreamy images.
