How to Photograph Silhouettes in 6 Easy Steps
Positioning you light
Place the light source behind your subject. Your subject stays in shadow, and turns into a silhouette when you take the photo.
Turn off your flash
If your camera is set on automatic, it will try to meter for your subject, and the pop up flash will automatically come up. Change your camera settings to manual.
Choose a recognizable subject
Look for subjects with distinct shapes and strong lines.
Use manual focus
Your autofocus may struggle in low light, so you switch over to manual if you are having difficulties.
Expose for the sky
You’ll need to trick your camera by metering the sky, not the subject. Point your camera at the brightest part of the sky, press the shutter halfway down, and recompose your image and shoot.
Shoot from a low angle
When you capture an image from a lower angle, it simplifies the background and eliminates distracting elements.
